Mountains of logs waiting for train cars; U.P. rail woes

By John Pepin, Journal Munising Bureau,

The Mining Journal, October 23, 2005

"Photo: (Right) Thousands of pulpwood logs sit stacked along the Canadian National Railway tracks in Dollarville. A shortage of rail cars and increased freight charges are making it extremely difficult for timber producers in the eastern Upper Peninsula to get their logs to mills in Wisconsin and Minnesota."

This need not happen. Increased supply chain visibility will help create a market in which producers, consumers, loggers, log truckers and the railroads are empowered to minimize peaks and valleys of seasonal and cyclic demand and to optimize transportation of wood from stump to mill.
